What’s that old Ice Cube song, “It Was a Good Day”? I think we progressives need an anthem for today because it was a good day!
- A federal appeals court has ruled that the Prop 8 ban on same-sex marriage in California is unconstitutional! This is awesome news and a big win in the fight against hate! While this is surely just another step toward a show-down at the Supreme Court, it is good to savor this win. This is important because it validates the argument that Prop 8 sets up a separate class — treating gays and lesbians separate but not equally — which violates the 14th Amendment. We are all the same and deserve the same protections and rights under the law. Period. Hurray for one more nail in the coffin of Prop 8!
- In equally awesome news, anti-choice activist, failed gubernatorial candidate and Susan G. Komen for The Cure Vice President Karen Handel resigned! While she says she alone is not the architect of the anti-choice maneuvering that sought to remove breast cancer screening monies from Planned Parenthood last week, she was conspicuously at the center of the drama. And that may all be by design. We should celebrate the victory of “outing” Komen as an anti-choice front, but let’s not rest too easy on our laurels. Komen has only said that they will let Planned Parenthood re-apply for the grant funding. And Komen’s founder, Nancy Brinker, has been a figure in the GOP machine — working for GW Bush and contributing to many campaigns — for years. Likewise, this firestorm now sets Handel up as a darling of the anti-choice community. That said, I’m still glad she’s outta there.
- And finally, conservative homophobes One Million Moms got a time-out for their tantrum over JC Penney announcing Ellen DeGeneres as their new spokesperson. In awesome fashion, JC Penney has stood by their choice. Because let’s be honest, this is a good choice. This controversy is stupid. Seriously, how can you not like Ellen?
