Feminists in Las Vegas? Seems like a contradiction on the order of deep-sea diving in the desert. But we’re here! And, like the hardy cactus flower, we can be undeniably strong in the presence of impossible circumstances.
In fact, I dare you to be a feminist in the face of the neon carnival of the Strip!
I hope this is a quiet beginning to a many splendored thing. Here at the Siren I hope to encourage the feminists in our community to speak up, be counted and get involved! At my day job as a staff writer at Las Vegas CityLife, I see too few local feminists trying to carry the load. But I know there are more of us out there in the glittering desert with untapped potential!
That goes for me, too. It’s easy as a journalist to sit on the sidelines and point out what’s wrong. (And there’s plenty to point out in Las Vegas!) I’m tired of waiting for “someone else” to do the heavy lifting. I know I can’t change the world, or even Las Vegas, by myself but there is power in community and communication.
Please check back for regular posts about politics, pop culture and life in this world-famous city from a feminist perspective. In coming days and weeks I hope to customize this space. (A local feminist artist is already helping me with a logo, so the community is building already!) Look for guest commentaries by my fellow feminist writers as well as regular features where feminists discuss and debate the many sides of current controversies such as the ERA, being childfree by choice and whether or not sex work is a feminist vocation.
It’s a work in progress and a labor of love. I’m hoping today I plant a seed that blossoms into wonderful things!
