Don’t cut education: rally

Wanted to share this with the group:

Las Vegas-On Thursday, March 26, 2009 from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., Nevada’s Students of Higher Education will be rallying at UNLV’s academic mall (in front of Beam Hall) in order to highlight student-centered research and education.

There will be eight students speaking. Four of the eight students are the student-body presidents. Each president will introduce a student from each campus to speak on how their education and research betters the State of Nevada.

The reason for this strong research-oriented emphasis is to show how students are making an impact on campus and in the community. While the students understand the economic crisis that the entire state is facing, students remain committed to their request from legislative leaders in maintaining funding for higher education. They are also reminding legislators that the Nevada System of Higher Education has already experienced budget reductions of over $25 Million this biennium, and the impact for fiscal year 2009 is estimated at an additional 8% cut.

Those concerned citizens attending the rally will be invited to visit tents devoted to specific key legislators in order to write letters of encouragement and will ask that the leaders of Nevada continue standing behind higher education.

This event is being co-hosted and organized by the student governments of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), College of Southern Nevada (CSN), and Nevada State College (NSC).
