You’ve seen my list of fav feminist books, now here’s the list of movies. It’s by no comprehensive and it’s not in any kind of order. Please feel free to leave me more suggestions in the comments. We need to spread the word about the movies we’ve seen because so many of the good ones are indies. (I spent a good hour last night searching around Netflix and realized that every time I clicked a movie I’d seen it and all the “similar to” movies listed under it.)
Here goes:
- Thelma & Louise
- Citizen Ruth (brilliant! if you haven’t seen it, go watch it right now!)
- But I’m a Cheerleader
- Erin Brokavich
- Ever After — A Cinderella Story
- Mean Girls
- Whale Rider
- Bend it Like Beckham
- The Wizard of Oz
- The Long Kiss Goodnight
- La Femme Nikita (and it’s American remake Point of No Return)
- Run Lola Run
- Lara Croft – Tomb Raider
- Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
- G.I. Jane
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer
- Mona Lisa Smile (debatable, perhaps)
- His Girl Friday
- Woman of the Year
- Adam’s Rib
- Norma Rae
- Silence of the Lambs
- 9-5 (depressingly still relevent 27 years later)
- Tank Girl
- Contact
- V for Vendetta
I’m sure there are many more that I’ve either forgotten or haven’t seen yet. (For instance, I’ve got North Country on its way to my house via Netflix as I write this.) I’m hesitant to put anything on here I haven’t seen yet, because I feel like anything on the site I should be able to defend or at least discuss. But I’m open to suggestions! Give me your candidates and let’s make a good list.
[Update: don’t update this page for new movies. But I do keep an on-going list on the Books & Flicks page (up at the top of the blog).]
