News stew

Seems that I touched a nerve with that last post about the baby madness. I’m hoping it’s doing some of you out there some good. We all just beat up on ourselves a little too much.

Only got a hot minute to fill you in on some various news items passing around today:

  • Michelle Obama, all-around super-accomplished woman and wife of that presidential hopeful guy, will be in town tomorrow morning to launch the local chapter of “Women for Obama.” For those interested, festivities are at 9:30 a.m. at the Cambridge Community Center.
  • In other Dem presidential hopeful madness, State Sen. Dina Titus officially endorsed U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton. In case you cared.
  • The Nevada Conservation League is asking the voting-aged among us to contact Sens. Reid and Ensign to encourage them to support the Renewable Electricity Standard amendment (scheduled to be heard as early as today). The bill would require 15% of our electricity to be produced from renewable sources (a prime option in Nevada) by 2020 as well as other good stuff.
  • Could the American auto industry be guilty of a greenwashing ad campaign? Several environmental groups are crying foul about a new radio campaign on StateNets radio affiliates (of which there are none in NV). The National Environmental Trust is pissed and says that such ads are an attempt to disseminate misleading information about emission standards and fuel economy in an attempt by the U.S. Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers to sway voters and thus elected officials. This is leading up to a vote in Congress which could improve fuel economy, lower emissions and create tougher standards for cars in the U.S.
  • The Nevada Attorney General announced today a settlement with Warner Chilcott, the brand name drug maker of birth control Ovcon. Nevada joined 34 other states in suing the company for allegedly conspiring with another company to prevent a cheaper generic form of the drug from being sold. Douchebags.
  • The Southern Nevada NOW chapter will be having their monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, June 17 at the Clark County Library. For those not nursing a hang-over, head over and meet other awesome feminists in the community.
  • I love things were you can make your consumerism count for activism or charity at the same time. (That’s why I like to shop on the Internet through sites like iGive.) So if you are already planning on donating some work-appropriate threads, why not take them down to Theory between June 15 and June 20? They are collecting clothes for the Dress for Success campaign. Donations will get you 20% off your purchase.
  • Not sure how I feel about bachelor/bachelorette auctions, but I like the idea of helping out the local non-profit the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. You can put a bid on a hottie for a good cause on June 22 at Ghostbar.
