I just wanted to put up a quick post for all the new people who might be finding the site today, nearly the end of my second week as a blogger! (I can’t believe The Sin City Siren is the first thing that comes up when you plug this blog’s name into Yahoo! Wow!)
Super BIG thanks to Nevada NOW for including this humble blog in their weekly e-mail blast! This is a space where I hope we feminists can have a dialogue, share some wisdom (and laughs) and even encourage activism. I consider this an online feminist magazine and sort of virtual community square so don’t hesitate to give me feedback or contact me about writing for the Siren.
So what’s my agenda? Building rad feminist community! As you’ll get to know through this blog my big issues are stopping violence against women, helping disadvantaged kids and encouraging the arts (in all its wonderful forms). In fact, I’m hatching a plan to perhaps create a scholarship for disadvantaged kids who can’t afford musical instruments or art supplies (if anyone can help me figure out how to do this, let me know).
In coming months I hope to be a catalyst for activism, community events and fun happenings. One of the first things I hope to do is get the “fag bug” here (see below). My dream event right now is to get feminist author and Feministing.com Executive Editor Jessica Valenti out here for a book reading with her new book Full Frontal Feminism. She’s my young feminist idol! What else? Maybe we could put together a concert for charity. Help some kids in the community. Put on a feminist art show. Let’s make something happen together! I certainly can’t do it alone!
Before I dash off to go pay my bills at my day job at Las Vegas CityLife (and while I’m shamelessly plugging myself, please check out my cover story this week about the Women’s Research Institute of Nevada’s NEW Leadership program, a fabulous incubator for local feminist activists!) let me plug a coupla feminist happenings:
- Nevada NOW will be in the Helldorado parade at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 19 at 4th and Las Vegas Boulevard and they want you to get involved! A NOW member has donated her convertable and members will be walking to carry NOW banners. Others are encouraged to join in. Contact Jessica at NevadaNOW@gmail.com.
- Southern Nevada NOW will be having a meeting at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday at the Clark County Library.
- On Wednesday, May 23 your grocery shopping can support a good cause! That day is the “community support” day at Whole Foods. 5% of net sales that day will benefit local domestic violence organization S.A.F.E House.
