As if we weren’t already looking down the barrel of a barn-burner of a presidential campaign season, President Barrack Obama just raised the stakes today by becoming the first sitting US president to come out in favor of same-sex marriage rights. (Kinda makes Vice President Joe Biden’s pro-equality comments last week — however hackneyed by Will & Grace references — seem like a test-drive, huh?) And as this comes on the heels of the North Carolina vote (only 20 states offer any form of legal protection to LGBT couples), naturally it’s got GOP blowhards blustering about the political timing of this announcement, following years of Obama saying his views on the issue were “evolving.”

Screw all the political posturing and grand-standing. This is a defining moment. Not just for Obama and his bid for a second term. This is bigger than that. This is bigger than just one president. As Newark Mayor Cory Booker said on Rachel Maddow tonight, this is about whether or not America is the country we say we are.

Are we a country where ALL people are equal under the law or not?

It’s that simple.

I know in the coming months there will be a lot of people screaming on TV and into radio microphones and in ALL-CAPS on twitter that this is about the sanctity of marriage or about the fabric of our society and keeping to traditions… and so on. And that’s all bullshit. Because these same people are people who have gamed the system, condemned drug addicts while popping pills, cheated on their spouses, hid money in off-shore accounts, used religion as a weapon of terrorism, and smiled into the camera as they demonized health care decisions that are none of their fucking business. For all their grand-standing, they reveal themselves to be the biggest hypocrites and the biggest liars of all.

They will try to use rhetoric and create “war”s on things. They will try to make it complicated when it is simple.

Well, I’m sick of it!

I’m a mother in a heterosexually defined marriage. I’m a Christian. I’m a homeowner and a taxpayer. I believe in the equality of all people, including LGBTQ individuals and their families. I am prochoice. I believe people should get equal pay for equal work. And I believe that our nation has the capacity to feed all those who live here, and it is a crime that Americans still go hungry every day.

AND I VOTE!

I vote with my dollars. I vote with my feet. I vote with my voice. And I vote at the polls!

And I’m not the only one. Word is, the president raised $1 million in the first 90 minutes following his announcement.

What’s the old rally chant? “We’re here. We’re queer. Get used to it!”

It’s about time.
