Sirens, it’s time to rally for our community. The “Christians” at Westboro Baptist Church are coming back to town on Tuesday (Nov. 1) to spread their hate. I can never understand the “logic” that the Westboro crowd uses to spread hate-speech and hateful messages against LGBTQ individuals, women, and many other demographics of people in communities across America. But if you can’t remember why you don’t like the Westboro folks, they’re the ones with “God Hates Fags” signs outside the funerals of Iraq war vets.
I just want to say for the record that I am Christian and I violently disagree with the horrifically distorted views that Westboro Baptist Church peddles as “Christian.” It is deeply offensive to me that terrorists like those at WBC hijack religion to spread hate. (And I want to take this opportunity to say that my church, Northwest Community Church, is an all-inclusive church with a strong LGBTQ membership who have organized against those at Westboro in the past and now.)
Luckily, I’m not alone in my thinking. My friends at ProgressNow Nevada are organizing a peaceful counter-protest at Clark High School starting at 1:30 pm (details here). Please remember to act civilly in the face of what will most likely be extremely antagonistic, hateful protestors. Westboro’s goal is to create anarchy and spread hate. We can’t let them win!
