Let’s put aside politics for just a moment and give Barack Obama a collective hug. His grandmother Madelyn Payne Dunham has died of cancer. My heart goes out to Obama to hear this news as there have been two deaths in my family this year — both from cancer.
There will be much to do in the coming days no matter who is elected president. Our economy is in deep trouble. We’re fighting two wars to no avail. And millions of people, especially children, are without healthcare.
But just for a moment, let’s think about Obama and his family as human beings. One of the things I learned through my dealings with cancer this year is that it opens your eyes to just how many people have experience (personally or through a loved one) with this disease. Cancer is horrible and my experience was to see amazing, loving, vital people snuffed out in a sickening decline. Terrible!
I just wanted to take a moment away from the frenzy and honor the pain and grief the Obama family must be feeling.
And if you are so inclined, this might be a good time to mention that there are many good cancer charities with events, volunteering and ways to donate. Do what moves you.
