Just got off the phone with Erin Davies — such a cool, amazing person! I’m even more excited to bring her Fag Bug message to Las Vegas now! It was inspiring to hear from her how this whole thing has changed her life and that it isn’t as easy as it looks.
“I have to constantly reconnect to my message,” she told me. Even regular trips in her car to the grocery store or the gas station all the sudden become an event and she never knows what the reaction will be. As she describes it, it has been very polarizing.
The big update is that the dates have changed when she’ll be here. She’s going to be going to California first so she’ll be in Las Vegas on July 26 and 27. As it turns out, I will be out of town during that time (my best friend is getting married in Portland), so I’ll need even more help on the ground here to help pull this off.
Now that the dates are set, it will be much easier to plan an event for her and we brainstormed a couple of ideas. One that I think we will definitely be doing (and is free) is a caravan down the Strip with her leading. We could get some other folks together and put some banners on their cars to follow her. And probably stop at the Las Vegas sign for photos, too.
Another thing Erin is really interested in is doing more informal, spontaneous acts of activism. She likes going to malls, churches, schools, sports games, etc. to just engage directly with regular folks who are not expecting it. (This makes for good material for her documentary she’s filming on this road trip.) So if anyone has suggestions (aside from the Strip and Fremont Street) for places she can stop around, then I’ll be sure to pass them on to her.
In the next week or so I hope to get the event details finalized (and hopefully the LGBT groups I’ve been talking to will be happy to take over the reigns since I will be gone). I hope to get event fliers printed before First Friday. Anyone who is willing to help me canvas First Friday, please let me know!
Also, if there is anyone who knows HTML and can help me create a button this blog to link directly to the Fag Bug paypal account, please let me know. I want to help her fundraise and if people can just give the money straight to her, without me being a middlewoman, all the better!
[Almost forgot! Erin is also hoping to connect with others who have been the victim of hate crimes on her trip. If you or someone you know has been been a victim, please feel free to contact me by e-mail (you don’t have to make your comments public) and I would be happy to pass that information on to her and help the two of you meet when she’s here.]
