Observations from the islands

See, I told you I can’t stay away! Getting ready to head out into another day in Hawaii but I wanted to take a moment to talk about body image. After a decade living in Sin City, I have to say that all the T&A and trophy wives have taken their toll on my neurotic body image center of the brain. And considering I’m a pasty-white, round Polish gal with asthma, I admit that I was worried about how I’d feel about my body on the island.  I haven’t been in a swimming suit since, well, years. There are some beauties here, for sure. But what has been very liberating to see is that for the most part, Hawaiians (and I use that term to loosely mean people who live in Hawaii, not natives specifically) don’t seem to give a shit about what you look like. (On the beach and in the tourist areas at least.) Maybe body image stuff plays out differently here and I don’t know the cues. But for this pasty white chic on vacation, it’s a welcome vacation in the neurotic body image center in my mind. Muhalo! Mahalo!

  1. It’s Mahalo sweets. Just came back from Oahu myself. Great weather friendly folks and no the locals don’t care what you look like in a suit.
