Post-election round-up

I can’t complain about the biggest race of the night. I am over-joyed that Obama won and am not ashamed to admit that I cried. But how did everything else shake out?

  • Local News: For the most part, Democrats did great in Nevada! And Nevada went blue nationally! Former State Sen. Dina Titus beat Republican incumbent Jon Porter for Congress. (Congresswoman Shelley Berkley reliably kept her seat as well.) But unfortunately Jill Derby lost her race to incumbent Republican Dean Heller. Too bad, because we could have had all three congressional seats go Dem and be women! Still 2 outa 3 ain’t bad. Meanwhile, Dems took control of the State Senate (including Bob Beers and Joe Heck losing seats!) and the Assembly went two-thirds majority Dems. And Dems hold every seat on the Clark County Commission after yesterday’s election. Am I dreaming? It’s a beautiful day.
  • Good News: Anti-Abortion measures failed. Colorado’s amendment (to define a “person” as existing from the moment an egg is fertilized) lost. So did North Dakota’s abortion ban and California’s Prop 4, which would have required parental consent for minors.
  • Bad News: California’s Prop 8 — designed to ban same-sex marriages — passed. That sucks. Likewise, voters in Arizona and Florida passed similar laws while Arkansas voted to prohibit non-married couples from adopting or being foster parents. Sigh. Fear is still alive in America.
  • The Lame News: Missouri passed an English-only law, which applies to all government meetings.
  • The Embarrassing News: Proof that my home state is the most corrupt in America? Indicted Alaskan Republican Ted Stevens (the longest serving Senator in history) won. Although the margin was by 1 percent.
