And now, a word from one of my favorite local groups (who don’t get nearly enough attention!):
Who does Mayor Oscar Goodman, First Friday, Sin City Chamber of Commerce and Aid for AIDS of Nevada love to have show up at their events? Who won the Las Vegas LGBT Center 2008 Non-Profit of the Year Award?
The Holy Order – Sin Sity Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, that’s who. This small order of 21st century drag nuns are an all-inclusive, all volunteer 501-c-3 that has passionately infiltrated the Las Vegas psyche with their outrageously colorful “bad habits”.
For 30 years the mission of the International order has been to expiate stigmatic guilt, and promulgate universal joy. The Sin Sity Sisters mission also includes being with their community through outreach with a focus on safer sex, HIV and rape prevention education, all while comforting the disturbed and disturbing the comfortable.
The Sisters Aids Drug Assistance Program (SADAP) has become a reality. It provides financial aid for the Las Vegas valley clients that are living with HIV/AIDS. It helps with things like medical co-pays and with drug assistance alternatives. The annual February “Sisters, Saints and Sinners – Red Dress Event” is a vibrant party that supports this worthy cause. Everyone must wear a red dress, which represents the AIDS ribbon and is a showing of solidarity with those battling the disease. The Downtown Lounge and Beauty Bar are scheduled to host the night in February 2010 and will allow everyone the opportunity to experience a red dress paradigm shift.
Sin Sity Sisters also host a Balls Out Bingo at the Free Zone Lounge in the Fruit Loop the first Sunday of each month, along with various other bar fund raisers and HIV outreach ministries. If you like Bingo but find it a bit to “Ssshhhh!” Am I in the damn library? Get you fanny in a seat for the next Sister Bingo. It‘s only $10.00 for 11 games, free shots on 0-69, and oh yes cheap, cheap drinks and more mayhem and crazy then a ten spot should buy. Plus it all supports their SADAP program.
With glitter and seven-inch heels firmly planted on Las Vegas’s desert floor, The Sin Sity Sisters invite you to come support their mission to make life a little easier for those living with HIV or those who just need an unconditional shoulder to lean on.
Remember: play safe, embrace joy and say “Hi Sister” if you see them on the town.
